Players will compete for the Colston/Scammell Shield which honours two legendary coaches in the Riverina, Terry Colston [Cobram] and Tony Scammell (Albury).
Both Terry and Tony coached Riverina sides at under 16 and under 17 level. Both coaches have passed, Terry in 2006 and Tony in 2021.
The carnival is a selection trial for the Bradman Cup, an important part of the Country Cricket NSW High Performance program.
For the fourth time the Bradman Cup splits into a north/south carnival for the first three rounds. The northern carnival will be held at Port Macquarie on the weekend of November 22/23 and the same weekend, the southern carnival will be held in Orange
At these two mini carnivals, the teams play two T20 matches on the Saturday and a one day match on the Sunday.
All eight competing zones will converge on the Albury border region from January 5-8 to complete the carnival. Having separate carnivals using two formats enables all eight sides to play each other.
Riverina will be looking for an improved showing at the Orange and Albury carnivals as last season although competitive, they finished second last with just one win over Central North.
Southern Riverina’s (SRCC) only win in the Colston Scammell Shield was in the 2015-16 season.
SRCC had a pretty handy captain. His name was Todd Murphy and he has gone on to represent Australia in Test matches.
This carnival coming to Deniliquin for the second time will enable the Deniliquin District Cricket Association and Deni Rhinos to showcase the new clubrooms which were recently opened with not much change out of $1 million.
The carnival will also be a great boost to the Deniliquin economy with more than 50 talented cricketers, parents, plus coaches and umpires enjoying the facilities.
The draw is as follows:
Sunday – Southern Riverina vs Murrumbidgee at Memorial Park (Centre).
Cricket Albury Wodonga Country vs Northern Riverina at Memorial Park (East).
Monday – Murrumbidgee vs Norrthern Riverina at Memorial Park (East).
Cricket Albury Wodonga Country vs Southern Riverina at Memorial Park (Centre).
Tuesday – Cricket Albury Wodonga Country vs Murrumbidgee at Memorial Park (East).
Southern Riverina vs Northern Riverina at Memorial Park (Centre).
All matches are 50 overs a side with play to start at 11am on Sunday and 10am on Monday and Tuesday.
At the end of the carnival the Colston Scammell Shield will be presented to the winning team, plus premiership medallions.
