Efforts made by a community committee to bring disability services to Deniliquin and district will be celebrated in one of Deniliquin’s newest housing developments.
An application has been made to give the name Yallambee Court to a new road in the Kurrajong Estate sub-division in south Deniliquin.
The development backs on to disability service provider Kurrajong, which was originally known as Yallambee Deniliquin.
The sub-divided land belongs to Kurrajong, which will also build assisted living homes in the development using proceeds of block sales.
A request for the name Yallambee Crt was initially supported by Edward River Council, and has now been submitted to the Geographical Names Board of NSW.
Yallambee was established in the early 1970s by concerned parents of children with disabilities.
A school was established in Napier St and opened in November 1974 and by the late 1970s, the service expanded to include adult training.
Yallabee Deniliquin Ltd became an entity in 1993 following handover from the Challenge Foundation, and the organisation merged with Kurrajong in 2013.
Work on Kurrajong Estate started in 2023.
The estate provides for 25 residential blocks and four for Kurrajong’s assisted living homes, with lot sizes ranging from 745m² to 1290m².
Ash Real Estate owner Ash Hall said seven of the blocks are already sold or under offer.
Interest in the other blocks has been strong in the pre-sale period, and are expected to go quickly once service connections and pre-construction works have been completed.
Mr Hall said provided the remaining items are completed on schedule, sales should be launched by mid-August.
