A severe frost warning has been issued for Victoria's Northern Country, north-east, and East Gippsland regions, with temperatures expected to plummet to -5°C on Saturday morning.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that ground-level temperatures could fall significantly lower than official weather station readings, particularly during calm conditions with clear skies.

These conditions pose a serious threat to vulnerable crops across the affected regions.

Parts of the Mallee, Wimmera, North Central, Central and West and South Gippsland districts are also expected to experience frost conditions, with temperatures dropping to -3°C.

Growers are implementing frost protection measures, including draining irrigation systems and lighting orchard fires to protect their produce from the devastating effects of severe frost.

The cold snap comes as winter settles in across Victoria, bringing foggy mornings and saturated soils from recent rainfall.
