Also being introduced this year is a class on current affairs and on the popular game of canasta.
Many of the group’s favourite courses will continue in 2023, with the exception of tai chi which will not be offered.
U3A stands for University of the Third Age. It is an international movement which aims to educate retired or older members of the community - those in their ‘third age’ of life.
Deniliquin U3A is made up of mature aged people who want to continue learning, being active, and teaching others what they know.
Term one begins on Monday, February 6, and those wishing to enhance their knowledge are encouraged to attend the U3A enrolment day on Monday, January 30.
It will be held in the Deniliquin RSL Club’s Gallery Room from 11am to 1pm.
“Membership is just $30, payable by cash or cheque only on the day,” U3A member Gayle Beckton said.
“Anyone new to U3A is welcome to attend three classes for free before committing to membership.
“The only condition is that this be three separate classes, not three sessions of one class.”
In term one, Monday classes will include a walking group, sing-a-long, book club (once a month), creative writing, old time dancing and instruction in iPhones and iPads.
On Wednesdays there will be a scattergories or games session, discussion group and mahjong.
Another walking group session will be hosted on Thursdays, when there will also be a coffee club and classes on history, canasta, current affairs (twice a month) and Auslan.
The fourth Friday of each month is set aside for a committee meeting and special guest speakers.
More information about the classes can be obtained on enrolment day, where a timetable for the Edward River Seniors Festival - held in conjunction with Edward River Council from Thursday next week - will also be available.
U3A heads into the new year and term with a new president at the helm, with Helen Thompson taking over from Alison Wilson, who remains on the executive as vice president.
Gill Fraser is secretary, Sue Gatacre is treasurer, Helen Burnham is program co-ordinator and Mrs Beckton is the publicity officer.
U3A committee members are Airlie Circuitt, Marlene McGay, Marje Donohue, Tom Oram and Judy Smith.
Mrs Beckton said Jan Renwick and John Waters were both farewelled from the committee at the AGM, and thanked them for their contributions to the organisation.
