This year the Snippers fielded three teams - an under-16 team coached by Jim and John Ryan, an under-8 side coached by Will Schiller and an under-10 team coached by Richard Cannon, Rowan Houston and Deniliquin’s Paul Marshall.
To form the teams, the club drew players from Hay, Hillston, Deni, Mosgiel, Blighty and Carrathool.
“Our players travel further to a couple of training sessions than other teams in a whole season,” club president Sarah Houston said.
“It is pleasing to see that the skill level is developing in all players, and results are showing.
“Our kids are really working together as a team, and fingers crossed we can go one (or two) better next year.”
The under-10 side was particularly competitive throughout the season, narrowly missing out on the grand final.
In that team were Deniliquin distrct players - Tom Marshall, Hunter Campbell, Sam Strong and Julian Sands.
The side finished third in the Southern Inland Competition, behind the Cootamundra Bears and Wagga Crows Green.
“This is an incredible result,” Houston said.
“Our kids are competing against teams from towns with so many more kids than ours.”
As the Snippers don’t have the numbers to field teams of older players, some of its rugby enthusiasts joined the Griffith Blacks this year.
Archie Houston and Emily Caughey were also selected to represent Southern Inland in the Southern States Championships earlier in the year.
The club celebrated the season at a presentation evening at Hay’s Crown Hotel in late September.
Deniliquin’s Hunter Campbell won the under-10 Next Gen Award.
The under-10 side was coached by Richard Cannon, Rowan Houston and Deniliquin’s Paul Marshall (absent).
