Designed to showcase what can be produced in the electorate, Long Table Cafe co-owner Kathy Smits said she used the opportunity to talk policies which affect production with the nation's decision makers.
“I hand delivered letters from my farming neighbours expressing their concerns to Sussan Ley and I spoke about water policy with Barnaby Joyce and to whoever else would listen to me.
“I expressed what I wanted to say to them clearly and directly, so Barnaby gave me his contact details and has asked me to put together a solution.
“I felt they both took the time to listen, or maybe they just hung around for the food. But I felt that I gave it a fair dinkum crack.
“It went better than expected.”
Held in Canberra, MPs and hundreds of staffers dropped by the food fair for a ‘taste’ of our region.
The event, which this year featured 20 producers from the Murray-Riverina region and Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, is coordinated by Member for Farrer Sussan Ley.
“It is a chance for MP's and staff from across the nation to relax at an informal gathering, and allows us to showcase exactly why we are regarded as the nation’s most important food bowl,” Ms Ley said.
“The drought is biting hard for many in our agriculture sector, and the fair doubles as an opportunity to show the nation’s decision-makers why ongoing support for the domestic production of food, wine and fibre is absolutely vital.”
