The Souvlaki Stand is a staple local food offering at the Ute Muster in October, and the tennis club is looking for anyone who wants to contribute to the local cause and enjoy the perks of their volunteer contribution.
The importance of getting volunteers for the stand for the tennis club to operate cannot be overstated.
The stand creates much-needed fundraising for the club, with funds raised going to its general operation.
This helps keep club memberships low (at least $100 less than they might otherwise be).
As a result, the club is asking for help from the public - whether you’re a tennis player or not.
The stand operates from 8am to 11pm on both Friday, October 4 and Saturday, October 5.
A free ticket to the Ute Muster is on offer for each Souvlaki Stand volunteer who works a minimum of 10 hours over the two days.
Volunteers will receive the appropriate training required.
DLTC life member Lourene Liebenberg said the club has had the souvlaki stand at the muster since its inception in 1999. She has personally volunteered for 12 years.
“The stand is run by volunteers, but not just volunteers from the club - it’s volunteers from everywhere in the community that can help get the job done.
“Normally, we need 25 to 30 volunteers across the two days.”
Getting involved on the stand is always a fun team effort.
“We always have had a great group of volunteers who have heaps of fun.
“It is a great time, but we also take the operation of the stand seriously.
“We rarely stop selling from the start of our first morning shift and there are groups of festival goers who come back for our souvlakis each year.”
Liebenberg said the people on the stand have taken pride in the local effort that has provided the fresh, delicious food across 25 years.
“If I’m correct, we are the only local sporting club still there as a local food provider.
“Everything is fresh and prepared on-site. We have people and customers who come back each year and love the freshness of our decent-sized meals at an affordable price.
“We’re very thankful and proud of the stand, and each year, we’re very well supported by the local and visiting community.”
Liebenberg said providing immense support in the lead up to the club ahead of muster weekend is the Deniliquin Croquet Club, with whom they share the Charlotte St courts and facilities.
“The Croquet Club helps with preparing tomatoes, lettuce and the yoghurt sauce.
“It is usually more than 100kg of tomatoes and 120kg of lettuce they are preparing, so we give massive thanks to the croquet club each year.”
