The Pastoral Times staff were caught a little unaware yesterday when an unusual sound echoed through Deniliquin.
From inside our offices, the staff with better hearing heard the faint toot of a train horn.
And sure enough, there was a multi-car train rolling up on the rails adjacent Napier St.
The bright yellow train brandished the Metro logo, and on the side of one of the cars was ‘evaluation vehicle’.
While we’re not certain why the train was here, we believe it may be linked with freight line upgrades we reported on in November.
The work on the Deni to Echuca line are part of a $181 million investment by the Victorian Government.
Quick health checks
Did you take advantage of the Rotary Men’s Health Education Rural Van’s visit to Deniliquin?
More commonly known as mherv, the van was here on Friday and Saturday completing quick health checks for both men and women.
In the comfort of the van, registered nurse Jennifer Roders was taking blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and having a general quick chat about health with anyone who stopped by.
She was supported by Rotary Club of Deniliquin members, who acting as the welcoming wagon.
Rotarian Di Hand said Friday morning was particularly busy for the van, with keen locals lined up and ready to go before the van was ready to go.
Pastoral Times journalist Rowan Frazer took a quick break from his desk on Friday for his check-up, and we’re glad to report he passed with flying colours.
Praise for Nutrien, community
The fundraising efforts of the Deniliquin community have been shared with NSW parliament, thanks to Member for Murray Helen Dalton.
Mrs Dalton stood last week to make a formal Community Recognition Statement for Nutrien Ag Solutions Deniliquin and its Do It For Dolly Day fundraiser.
Held on May 10, the three hour breakfast was extended to five hours to cater to demand.
After picking up extra supplies, the team cooked up 25kg of bacon and more than 500 eggs to make more than $500 rolls.
With a $1000 donation from the Denilqiuin Rodeo Committee added, they raised $11,000 for the important anti-bullying foundation Dolly’s Dream.
