The name ‘Legends Rest Area’, suggested by community members, was endorsed by the council this week.
This reflects the area being the location of the Deniliquin & District Transport Industry Wall of Fame honour board and memorial wall.
The community is now being invited to provide feedback on the decision over the next 28 days, before the name is formally adopted and submitted to the Geographical Names Board of NSW.
During the initial public submission period, council received about 30 name suggestions.
There was strong community support for the name ‘Legends Rest Area’, or similar wording.
Mayor Ashley Hall said the name reflects the significance of the transport industry in Deniliquin, and honours the contributions of individuals recognised on the Wall of Fame.
“The name ‘Legends Rest Area’ pays tribute to the proud history and ongoing legacy of Deniliquin’s transport industry.
“It’s a fitting recognition of the legends who have shaped our community”.
This naming follows council’s earlier resolution at its February meeting this year to endorse the name ‘Flo Allen Park’ for the area covering the former North Deniliquin tennis courts, also located within the reserve.
In addition to these naming decisions, council will develop a naming policy for public parks and facilities to guide future naming processes and ensure community involvement and transparency.
Community members are encouraged to view the proposed name and provide feedback during the exhibition period. Go to www.haveyoursay.edwardriver.nsw.gov.au, or provide feedback by visiting the council offices.
