The fundraiser has been co-ordinated by Adam and Meg Marshall in honour of their three year-old son Eddie who suffers from neurofibromatosis type 1.
The couple found out about the diagnosis in 2018 and have been working to raise awareness and funds for the Children’s Tumour Foundation (CTF) which supports children and their families with NF.
It is a serious, incurable and unpredictable genetic condition that can cause tumours to grow on any nerve cell throughout the body, including the brain and spinal cord.
The run will be held on Sunday, March 22, and will put the ‘hilarity in charity’ with participants dressing down and taking to the streets.
At the inaugural event last year more than 110 people participated, however Mrs Marshall said this year has been a lot slower with registrations.
“We are very sensitive to everything else that has been going on with the bushfires, drought and other charity events but we are hoping to achieve similar numbers to last year,” she said.
“We need more runners and more sponsors as we want to raise $20,000.
“CTF is not for profit and is mainly run by parents of sick kids. The government support isn’t there, however there is roughly one in 2500 people affected by NF in Australia.
“So far we have had support from Evolve and Deniliquin Children’s Centre, who have both entered teams in the run.
“We are hoping to get a few more sporting teams and community groups on board to support us this year.
“We’re really light on fundraising for the actual event but have received some very generous donations.
“We’d like to thank the Deniliquin Truck Show & Industry Expo as well as the Blighty Hotel for their fundraising efforts.”
Registration for the event is $60 per person and includes your undies and other items.
Deniliquin’s Cupid’s Undie Run will be start from The Crossing Cafe in George St, Deniliquin, with pre-registration at 9.30am, accompanied by a live solo guitar performance by Trendy.
This will followed by the 1.5km walk from 10am.
Afterwards, participants will make their way back to The Crossing for post-race celebrations at about 10.30am, where there will be giant games, a raffle draw and jumping castles and face painting for the children.
There will be prizes for the highest fundraiser as well as best dressed male, female and child.
Mr and Mrs Marshall have also added a silent auction to this year’s event.
“We’ll have prizes and auction items which include a signed NSW Blues jersey, esky, car service vouchers and much more,” Mrs Marshall said.
“We also have Gomer and the Girl donating their time to perform for the post run celebrations, as well as the return of our ‘most undies in a minute’ challenge, where people will try and put on as many pairs of undies as they can.”
Mr and Mrs Marshall will sell raffle tickets in front of Deniliquin Newsagency on Saturday, March 7 and at the Cressy St Kiosk on Friday, March 13.
