Organisers and participants in this year’s Rutherglen Vintage Bike Ride could not have asked for a finer day to tour one of our nation’s most historic wine regions.
Glorious blue skies and a pleasantly warm temperature were the perfect backdrop for a wonderful day of cycling and socialising.
The Rotary Club of Rutherglen Inc. were delighted with the success of the event, which attracted a staggering 250 participants.
All participants enjoyed a relaxed afternoon lunch at Cofield’s Winery with the ride and associated raffle raising much-needed funds to benefit the Rutherglen CFA and Motor Neurone Disease (Victoria).
Despite the unusually early vintage this year, there was still plenty for participants from as far afield as Alice Springs to enjoy during the day-long event, which set off from the Rutherglen Convent.
In keeping with the vintage theme, many attendees chose to dress in the style of yesteryear and were treated to a viewing of a collection of vintage bicycles.
“This may well have been the first time some of the guests had the opportunity to see a Penny Farthing in action,” event organiser Paul Hauff said.
“Not to mention the original, and very rare, Boneshaker from the 1860s.
“Riders enjoyed the music of talented local musician Paddy Russell, and many enjoyed catching up with friends whom they had not seen for some time.”
At the post-event function, attendees were treated to a superb sunset as they perused a magnificent collection of Pinarello cycles.
The event was a mighty showcase of the district’s tourism offerings, made possible by the assistance and generosity of many sponsors who supported the event as a whole.
“The event would not have been the success it was without the strong support of these local businesses and the tireless work of Rotarians and their families,” Mr Hauff said.
“The members of voluntary organisations play a big part in retaining and strengthening the fabric of our border community and all locals are encouraged to participate and get involved where they can.”
There has already been strong interest in signing up for another event next year and fingers will be crossed for perfect weather once again.
The organisers of the Vintage Ride extend a very big thank you to all of the sponsors and event partners who helped make the weekend such a success.
