This year marks the 80th anniversary of Children’s Book Week in Australia, an initiative of the Children’s Book Council of Australia.
To celebrate, council arranged for acclaimed author George Ivanoff to come to Deniliquin and take students through his writing process.
Mr Ivanoff is renowned for his interactive You Choose adventure series, and more than 100 published titles for children and teens, fitting in well with the 2025 Book Week theme of ‘Book an Adventure!’.
His work has been shortlisted for numerous awards, and he’s proudly taken home a few, making him a perfect mentor for young minds.
The workshops were hosted at the Deniliquin Town Hall on Thursday, with Year 5 and 6 students from each of the Deniliquin primary schools attending during the day to experience a creative deep dive into the art of storytelling.
Edward River Council’s library co-ordinator Christine Evola, who organised the event, said they were engaging presentations and the children relished the opportunity to listen and learn from a published author.
“Having an Australian author travel out to us is super encouraging for the children,” she said.
“He (George Ivanoff) was so excited to be here.
“He’s really energetic and passionate and the kids were definitely engaged.“
Ivanoff’s energetic style and imaginative storytelling captivated students as they explored two key themes, ‘Getting Started’ and ‘Creating Characters’ - the essential building blocks for any budding writer.
