Volunteer to shape safer drivers

The TAC L2P driver mentor program needs experienced drivers to help learner drivers get their hours up and learn critical road safety skills.

Run by the Campaspe Cohuna Local Learning and Employment Network, the program has been running in the region for 14 years, opening in October 2010.

The Transport Accident Commission funds the L2P initiative, committing $38.4 million over the last financial year to support almost 60 local councils and not-for-profits to provide the service.

The program teaches young drivers between 16 and 21 with a valid learner’s license to drive, providing them with car and a mentor that they otherwise would not have access to.

Learner drivers must show that they cannot access a suitable car or supervising driver.

Mentors are volunteers aged 21 or older from the community with their full driver’s license and a satisfactory driving history.

Campaspe L2P program is looking for mentors who are willing to volunteer to support local learners to get their probationary license.

The program has two branded Toyota Yarises for drivers to learn in and all mentors are provided with a free polo shirt from Worklocker Echuca.

Drivers who are interested in becoming mentors should attend a training session at the CVGT Employment Echuca office, 216 Darling St, Echuca, on Monday, May 27.
