Tomorrow’s World Suicide Prevention Day activities in Deniliquin have been postponed.
The Deniliquin Mental Health Awareness Group had planned to host a walk and lunch in the Deniliquin Waring Gardens.
But due to the weather forecast, it’s been moved to Wednesday, September 17 instead.
Deni MHAG wants the community to join them to spread the message that suicide is preventable, but stigma and silence must be broken..
The volunteer group’s event next Wednesday will run from 11am to 1pm.
The program includes a short walk at 11.30am, a community lunch at noon and another walk at 12.30pm.
Everyone is welcome to join at any time to show support, connect, and stand with the community.
This year’s World Suicide Prevention Day theme is ‘We all have a role to play – and it starts with a conversation’.
Deni MHAG member Lourene Liebenberg said it reminds us that suicide prevention begins with small but powerful steps.
“Checking in when we’re concerned, asking directly, listening with compassion, and encouraging professional help can save lives,” she said.
“Local swimmer Brenda Norman has shown what determination can achieve, completing the gruelling North Channel swim through her Channel 4 Change initiative (see page 3).
“Brenda is raising funds for MHAG to deliver more free mental health first aid training.
“Importantly, every dollar raised stays in Deniliquin, supporting local mental health and wellbeing initiatives.
“A huge thank you to everyone who has already donated. Brenda’s fundraising page remains open during September for the walk and Mental Health Month (October).”
To donate, you can scan the QR code on page 5 of today’s edition, or go to justgiving.com/campaign/northchannel4change.
