• Navorina reaches its $1 million target - It was a big ask, but in just less than two years the community helped Navorina Nursing Home raise $1 million. A recent private donation saw the home reach the magic million mark. Every dollar is being spent on furnishings and comfort items, to complement significant construction upgrades at the Macauley St nursing home. Those upgrades have been funded by government grants and cash reserves.
• ‘Significant’ ag service - Noel Graham was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his lifetime commitment to agriculture. He was honoured for his roles with the Ricegrowers Association of Australia, Rice Marketing Board, Murray Irrigation, Cadell Land and Water Management Plan and Deniboota Landholders Association Drainage Committee, to name a few.
• Pretty Pine hosts 150 bikers for Shovel Muster - About 150 biking enthusiasts from all over Victoria and NSW attended the annual Deni Shovel Muster & Bike Swap Meet at Pretty Pine. The Shovelhead engine was produced by Harley-Davidson from 1966 to 1984, built as a successor to the previous Panhead engine. A 1980 FLH model Harley-Davidson was won by the Maude Hotel publican in the raffle. The crowd was entertained by live bands and all contributed to a $5000 donation to Deniliquin Can Assist - a charity which provides financial support to locals undergoing cancer treatment.
• High speed chase ends in 10 charges and a smashed fence – A 43 year-old man allegedly led police on a high speed chase through the Deniliquin area, resulting in a collision with another vehicle and damage to a local resident’s front yard. A car reported stolen was initially spotted on Wakool Rd, and reportedly led police on a pursuit reaching speeds of about 180km/h as it headed towards Denlilquin. Despite the pursuit being abandoned for safety reason, the Hilux was still being dirven evasively at about 85km/h, colliding with another car and then crashing through the fence of a residence on the corner of Macauley St and Charlotte St. The driver fled on foot and was arrested the backyard of Navorina Nursing Home
• Nigel wins MLHD staff member of the year award - Local mental health and drug and alcohol professional Nigel Smith won a prestigious regional award highlighting his exceptional talent at the Murrumbidgee Local Health District 2023 excellence awards. Mr Smith is the Mental Health Drug and Alcohol Services coordinator for Aboriginal peoples. In the previous 12 months he had been instrumental in the implementation of the Aboriginal Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy. He also took a lead role in the implementation of the Dialectical Behavioural Therapy Program.
• $1m development - Edward River Council approved the development application for an Endeavour Service Station to be established at the site of the former Deniliquin KFC in hardinge St. The approval was not unanimous however, with Mayor Peta Betts required to use her casting vote to approve the application. The service station will be open seven days a week and include a convenience store, parking for 15 vehicles, three underground fuel tanks and eight double sided fuel bowsers.

• Out of towners win Gulpa Fours in Mathoura - 24 teams entered to play the Mathoura Gulpa Creek Open Fours. On the Saturday night there were two teams who had won their three games, but with two games to be played on Sunday, the matter would be sorted out. Sunday saw both leading teams have a hiccup and had a point decision to make to get our place getters. Winners were Alan Callow, Michael Allen, Rob Edwards and Bob Whitcher (Ballarat). Runners-up were J Jonwingo, Damien Mason, Andrew Caserta and Laurie Wilham (Diamond Creek).
• Deni Cross Border champs trophy - The Cross Border Trophy was contested in Echuca, with Deniliquin Croquet Club coming out the winners. Mary James, Alan Higgins, Andy Davis, Darren McLoughlin, Brian Dudley, Fred Littmann, Brad Fawns, Leo Barry and Terry Murphy made up the successful team. In a close game, Deniliquin won by two hoops to bring home the trophy.
• A celebration fit for king - With a premiership in his debut year, many individual accolades and a respected reputation, it was no surprise that Ricky Gittens would be celebrated like a king in the Deni Rams’ Kings Birthday Weekend clash. It marked Gittens’ 200th senior game. The club put on a big celebration to mark the milestone for the reigning best and fairest winner.
• Long weekend tournament returns with big success - The Deniliquin RSL King’s Birthday long weekend Bowls Tournament returned with great success after the COVID imposed absence of the past two years. Deniliquin RSL Club Bowls Tournament coordinator Gary Koopman and Deniliquin RSL Bowls president Tony Tonta were both thrilled with the support from visiting and local bowlers. Strong fields on all three days ensured top class bowls with local participants featured amongst the winners on all days
• Blake’s a rising star - Hard work and dedication were starting to pay off for talented local Blake Charlton’s rise in stardom on the boxing circuit. Coming off two straight wins and two stellar performances, he earned the chance to compete in Lilydale for the light middle-weight Victorian regional title on Saturday, against Lilydale’s Danny Vanderhuvan, and won.
• Deni to host new Pro-Am golf event - Deniliquin Golf Club was named as the venue for a PGA of Australia (NSW) Pro-Am Series in September. Edward River Council joined forces with the Golf Club to secure a three year agreement to host the exciting event which is expected to attract more than 200 participants into the region over two days. Managed by the PGA of Australia and largely operated by local golf clubs, the Pro-Am is part of the prestigious golf event circuit for professional golfers.
