Called ‘Where Are We Now?’ and developed by cadet journalist Keira Doyle, this regular series will feature the young people of Deniliquin and where they find themselves after recently finishing high school or apprenticeships.
Tom McCallum is our first subject.
Many avid local sports fans may recognise the name Tom McCallum from Deniliquin Rams football results, or Deni Rhinos cricket reports.
Tom, known by many as ‘T-Mac’ or ‘Maccy’, left high school last year, graduating as part of the Deniliquin High School class of 2022.
Since leaving school, he’s decided to stick around in Deni and take up some trade work as an apprentice electrician with Tyndell Electrical Deniliquin.
“It’s really good work, you know. And I do enjoy it,” Tom said.
When he is not busy wiring up a light or installing an electrical outlet, Tom can be found on the cricket pitch or the football field.
He made quite the name for himself over at Ramland during the 2023 season, being awarded the title of the senior team’s ‘Rookie of the Year’ for the club.
This accolade cements his status as a rising talent at the club.
Despite his success on the field, Tom is focused on his short-term goals, which include finishing his apprenticeship and continuing with his football career.
“I’m not sure where I’ll be in a few years; I’ll just have to see what happens.”
We wish Tom all the best in his future endeavours and look forward to seeing how he does in the 2024 football season.
