ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls
Tuesday, March 1 – Midweek Pennant Results – Round 13
Division A1 – ClubMulwala 62 (12) defeated Corowa RSL 54 (2)
Lucky to get this one in as the weather threatened throughout the day. However CMOB came away with a very good win under the circumstances with two rinks up and one down. What a great group of people to play against and how good are some of their bowlers; Maree Jones with beautiful consistency all day as an example.
Five wins for the season (so far) may not seem like a success to some but when you take into account that this is only our second year at this level it really is quite an achievement. One to go from the season proper – let’s see if CMOB can come home with a six pack.
Results as follows:
Kay Smith, Graeme Arnold, Daryl Richmond and Stephen McPhee 21 defeated Kevin Porter, Brenton Ketchell, Tony Coughlin and Maree ones 14.
Mark Smith, Eugene Hodson, Mick Millsom and Kerry Merrett 29 defeated Andrew Dickins, Peter Summerill, Gary Brown and Judith Black 18.
Daryl Dighton, Kim Lefevre, Peter Humphreys and Jan Martin 12 lost to Peter Browne, Lorraine Carmody, Keith Mills and Lex Thornton 22.
Ladder Position – 6.
Division B1 – ClubMulwala 67 (12) defeated Myrtleford 58 (2)
Another great win by the B2 side which is not easy against a proud side like Myrtleford; especially on their home turf.
With two rinks up and the third only going down by three shots this will just about cement their position on top of the ladder with 11 wins and only two losses for season 2021-22. One game to go.
Can it get any better (apart from a championship win that is), well ask Loris Lochhead, Jan Morton, Betty Richmond and Graham Albert who scored an ‘8’ on the sixth end and they will tell you that this achievement is very special to them. Congratulations to you all.
Results as follows:
Cliff Morton, Malcolm Miller, Faye Cook and Judy Laughlin 20 lost to Mark Simson, Tom Mullane-Grant, Janine Powell and Annie Dunstone 23.
Loris Lochhead, Jan Morton, Betty Richmond and Graham Albert 28 defeated Colin Byrne, Pippa Laspina, Janice Shooter and Barry Rowe 20.
Barry Pitt, Jodi Powell, Anita Albert and Wade McPherson 19 defeated Graham Burrington, Graeme Attwood, Peter Sharkey and Noel Rowe 15.
Ladder Position – 1.
Division B2 – ClubMulwala 52 (0) lost to Wodonga 83 (14)
The first year B2 side continue to struggle however it is not for want of trying and there are a number of new bowlers and new to the club bowlers who will benefit from the experienced gained this year.
Remember the A1 side only managed one win in their first season last year and they have improved their position greatly this season.
Stay the course with one game to go and enjoy the great game that is played. This side is improving and will be better for the experience.
Results as follows:
Wayne Dowsey, Ray Tovey, Barry Martin and Pam Lefevre 18 lost to Geoffrey Brown, Ruth Smedley, Paul Morris and Cathy Stevenson 32.
Joan Connor, Nola Mongor, Laurie Leary and Russell Cook 12 lost to Carolyn Renfrey, Liz Coulston, Tony Wright and Lynette Cook 28.
Don Lockhart, Doug Chessum, Margaret Pretty and Nicole McPherson 22 lost to Graeme Pleming, Ken Darling, Christa Broad and Graham Searle 23.
Ladder Position – 7.
Friday, March 5 and Saturday, March 6 – Weekend Pennant Results – Round 14
Division A3 – ClubMulwala 71 (14) defeated Yarrawonga 67 (4)
This was the return of Friday night Pennant game under lights and if one was to be honest it was extremely harsh conditions under which to play a game of bowls.
The bowlers at Yarrawonga are great people and very professional in their approach to the game however, the conditions under the lights was horrific with a light out on one rink and the bugs and insects were in such numbers as to become a major distraction from the game.
The bugs etc are beyond the control of the Yarrawonga Club and you could argue that everyone had to play under the same conditions however, it is not conducive to good bowls and is something that should be looked at in the future.
The A3’s needed this win and as expected Yarrawonga came out firing on all fours and CMOB were lucky in the end to get the desired result.
The club had to wait until other games were played on Saturday to find out whether finals hopes were to be realised and luckily enough they were.
Congratulations to all players for your efforts during the year. There is, hopefully, a couple to go however it is up to us now.
Play at the best and match it with any of those above CMOB. The club offer their congratulations to Moira who finished on top of the ladder at the end of the home and away games.
Results as follows:
Kay Smith, Eugene Hodson, Kim Lefevre and Stephen Smith 16 lost to Stuart Johnstone, Jan Hermassoo, Heath Aston and Peter McKay 18.
Gary Parker, Graeme Arnold, Daryl Richmond and Jan Morton 19 defeated Max Calder, Maurice Lee, Kim Johnston and James Barnes 14.
Trevor Loe, Kerry Merrett, Liz Murdoch and Marg Pretty 13 lost to Tom Dodds, Raymond Sheridan, Ron Lamson and Valerie Kennedy 17.
Daryl Dighton, Malcolm Miller, Peter Humphreys and Bev Norwood 23 defeated Keith McQualter, Keith Allender, Bruce Owen and Brian Gentle 18.
Ladder Position – 4
Division B2 – ClubMulwala 10 (14) defeated Mansfield 0 (0)
Match was forfeited by Mansfield
The B2 side has had a great year on the green finishing second on the ladder at the end of the home and away games.
Just 7 points behind top finishing Chiltern it was a year to be proud of for this group of bowlers who showed great tenacity under conditions that were not always ideal as their ranks were purged to fulfil duties in the A3 side when it was necessary.
CMOB are so proud of this group of bowlers and wish them well in the finals.
Congratulations go to Chiltern who reigned supreme in the home and away games.
Results as follows:
Club Mulwala won on forfeit.
Ladder Position – 2
Division B3 – ClubMulwala 56 (3) lost to Wangaratta 67 (11)
This was a very good spectator game which was watched by quite a few club members who had come to support the B3’s.
The team tried hard however were unsuccessful in the end going down by just 11 shots overall. With one rink up, another drawn and the third rink being outplayed at the end it was mission impossible to make up the difference.
CMOB are rightfully proud of the efforts of the B3 side throughout a difficult year where, on some occasions the club had to forfeit because of lack of numbers and at other times were reinforced by substitutes from other teams, noticeably Yarrawonga for which the club were very grateful.
Even so they finished outside the top 4 by just a single point. CMOB congratulate Wangaratta on their great year finishing on top of the ladder at the completion of the home and away games and wish all teams in the finals good bowling.
Results as follows:
Don Lockhart, Frank Exton, Doug Chessum and Bob Keats 15 lost to Jack Dillon, Bruce Desmond, Graeme Bull and Chris Bell 30.
Joan Connor, Faye Cook, Laurie Leary and Russell cook 23 defeated Fred Herman, Ronald McAuliffe, Malcolm Hargreaves and John Keen 19.
Ray Tovey, Barry Martin, Carmen Mangan and Pam Lefevre 18 drew with Graeme Norman, Allan Wilson, Mick Lennane and Howard Beard 18.
Ladder Position – 5.

YMGCR Bowls
Weekend Pennant had the A1’s play Friday night against Corowa RSL under the fantastic lights at home and YMGCR won 16/75 to 2/60.
The weather was perfect, and the bowls was of a high standard. Jimmy Lefevre who was at the Wangaratta hospital on Thursday night not feeling the best showed a lot of courage to not only turning up to play and on top of that, he played very well with some telling drives.
He had great support from his teammates, Jonesy and Sanders who looked after the head while young James rested. Robyn Moore played her first game of weekend pennant ever and was thrown into the DEEP end (playing in the A1’s). She did a fantastic job, and the selectors would like to thank her for filling in as the A2’s and A4’s are still in the finals race. Jim won 20/12.
Stuart McNeill stepped up as fill in skipper and bowled very well and his rink won 21/14. Scott Widdison’s rink played well but was not getting the rewards they deserved, it took them to the 20th end to break the game open with a 5 to win 20/13.
Mick Szabo’s rink held many shots throughout the night but the young Corowa skip played out of his skin and on the 19th end YMGCR held 4 shots and the opposition skip had a gap of a bowl and a half to get through. He did and trailed the jack for a 7. They won 14/21. YMGCR sit 2nd on the ladder and will play Wangaratta next week.
The A2’s had the away trip to Yackandandah, with rain pouring and the green under water things were not looking too good and the game had to be played.
At one point a Yack member had a towel and was mopping up the water...very keen! After a couple of hours delay and with a full stomach of sandwiches and sauce rolls (Tony Durkin ate so much he couldn’t move for an hour). Eventually about 3.15 players hit the green and YMGCR won 16/84 to 2/61.
Laureen Smith’s rink won 28/12 and poor old Durkin had trouble bending over with his now bigger than ever stomach.
Robbie Hummel continued on his winning way with the whole team playing their part winning 25/13. Brown’s rink returned to the winners list winning 23/12 and Cat lost 8/24. The win puts YMGCR 3rd only ONE point from 2nd, so next week they play Myrtleford in a cutthroat final.
The A4’s who were 5th played 4th place Corowa RSL at home. They had to win 3 rinks to make the four but they couldn’t get the job done losing 2/66 to 16/88.
Marie Whitehead finished on a high winning 20/18, Doddy lost 16/20, Pricey lost 13/22 and Bob Evans went down 17/28.
Well done to the A4’s for a fantastic year; they got some big scalps along the way and were always around the four.
B2’s played Corowa RSL at Corowa and lost 2/49 to 12/57. Best rink was Terry Matthews rink who won 20/14, Noel Millar lost 19/24 and Billy Butterworth lost 10/19.
Thanks for all players who helped out in the B2’s. The selectors never had one complaint from the side and boy they do it hard because they rarely have the same side from week to week. Great job!
Midweek Pennant saw the A1’s play archrival Wodonga at Wodonga and they won 12/67 to 2/51. Stuart McNeill has his rink firing at the right time of the year and they won 29/18. Garry Sanders also got the job done winning 21/14 and Anne Miles lost 17/19 in a close game.
Next week they play 2nd side Wangaratta at home in what could be the preview of the Grand Final... a lot to play for.
A2’s travelled to Moira and lost 2/50 to 12/62. It was a costly loss as YMGCR have dropped from 2nd to 4th, the only bright spot of the day was the form of Bob Evans ‘s rink who won 18/14.
Goudge lost 18/24 and Brown lost 14/24. YMGCR can’t go out of the 4 but must get back on the winners list and get some momentum back as they are 4 points from 2nd (need a miracle to get 2nd spot. 2nd and 3rd play each other so YMGCR need them to draw).
A3’s played Wangaratta at home and lost 1/52 to 13/60. Rob Hummel drew 18/18; Les Balfour had a close battle going down 18/19 and Danny McNeill lost 16/23. Finals is a very faint chance and all the stars have to line up plus more.
B1’s played Swanpool at home and lost 2/44 to 12/66. Winning rink was Judy Goudge who won 18/15, Mary Essex lost 14/21 and Ross Lloyd lost 12/30.
Sunday in the O&M Mixed pairs saw a few YMGCR players in action. Mick Szabo and Lyn Baxter played the Wangaratta husband and wife team the Fruend’s and the Wang team won. The Fruend’s then went on to play YMCGR pairs in Spencer and Smith.
The YMGCR team won and now will play Anne Miles and Wangaratta’s Ian Brimecombe in the final at Corowa Civic next Sunday.
Hot off the press ...Weekend A1’s will play Wangaratta at Rutherglen, A2’s will play Myrtleford at Corowa Civic.
This week “RINK OF THE WEEK” and last for the season goes to Laureen Smith, Sue Middleton, Tony “Porky” Durkin and Rhonda Irvine with a +16.
BBQ is on Thursday, March 10 for ALL Pennant Players. Be there and support the teams who made finals. BBQ starts at 5pm.
The old boy was at it again this week ... yes G Presnell after finding his watch on his wrist; now he has left his wallet on the table at the golf club.
To all members, please go out of your way to help this poor old forgetful boy...he needs help.

A3 played ClubMulwala at home on the Friday night (5th) in a twilight game with a much better result than the last time they met.
Although Yarrawonga lost, it was only by 4 shots and was a very tight game right across the board with each club winning 2 rinks.
The best winning rink was Tom Dodd’s team (once again) getting up by 4 shots. Ladder Position 8th.
B2 played St James at home and got the win with just the 1 rink getting up. Well done to Mick Dixon and team on winning their rink by 23 shots, a great result.
Ladder Position 3rd.
The B2’s will be playing St James again in the Elimination Final on Saturday, March 12 at YMGCR 1pm start. The club wish them good bowling.
Unfortunately the A1 and A3 didn’t get into the four but who knows what next season can bring.
Thank you to everyone that made themselves available this season and those that filled in when needed.
Thank you to the Side Captains and helpers that helped in many various ways like selling raffle tickets, tending the Bar etc.
Thank you especially to the weekend selection committee, it is not an easy task at any time and unfortunately Covid 19 made the task even harder.
