Twenty-one clubs were represented from across NSW and Victoria, culminating in around 270 young athletes contesting a full schedule of track and field events.
Club president Lauren Ryan said it was a very successful day, thanks largely to the work of the many parent helpers and volunteers.
The event kicked off around 9am at the Hardinge St oval and went right through to 5.30pm, with marquees dotted around the oval and the club canteen in full swing.
Deniliquin had about 40 budding athletes compete in events ranging from the 70m sprint through to the 1500m, relay and hurdles, as well field events including long jump, high jump, shot putt, discus and javelin.
“We were very happy with how the day went, and it’s an important fundraiser for the club as well,” Ryan said.
“It’s also a great opportunity for our young athletes to test their abilities against some stronger competition, in a very encouraging and positive environment.
“It’s awesome to see the improvement in our young athletes, who’ve been turning up each Friday afternoon at our weekly club meet. It’s all about participation and improvement and we saw that in spades on Sunday.”
There were more than 50 carnival records broken, which included six Deniliquin athletes.
Young runner Oli Hall impressed breaking three records – junior 1500m (5:18.21 min), U11 400m (1:12.36 min) and U11 800m (2:40.11 min).
Levi Robson also starred, breaking the U10 800m record (2:49.37 min) and the high jump scissor record with a height of 1.23m.
Hudson Grant couldn’t wipe the smile off his face after claiming two records - the multi-class U11/12 discus (10.82m) and javelin (14.75m).
Samuel Strong scorched the turf in the U14 800m event, posting a record time of 2:50.42 min, while Zaria Wilson Baker claimed a new record in the U10 800m with a fine time of 3:05.39 min.
Cooper De Travers set a new benchmark of 51.18 seconds in the MC U9/10 200m.
“A big thank you to all the athletes and their parents who travelled from as far afield as Shepparton, Griffith, Echuca/Moama, Swan Hill, Bendigo, Kyabram, Barooga, Griffith, Cohuna, Finley and more – we very much appreciate your support,” Ryan concluded.
