Davis said he was confident and “dominated” the fight throughout each round, and he owed the victory to a change in his fighting style.
“There wasn’t a period in the fight where I thought I was behind or I could possibly lose, but at the same time one punch could change anything,” he said.
“I’ve had plenty of ups and downs, like I’ve lost some pretty close tough fights and I won some pretty good fights ... every loss has been a bit of a lesson.
“It’s just made me try harder and want the win more, so I think every loss is sort of a blessing, kind of like an inspiration.”
Davis’ coach Scott Maskell, owner and coach at The Fighter’s Academy in Cobram, was proud of the performance from student.
Maskell said he could clearly see from the sidelines how well the match was going.
“He deserves it, he’s been training and putting the time in ... makes it hard because we’ve gotta travel to get the good sparring and stuff like that,” said.
“It’s sort of a bit of a disadvantage like that, but that obviously doesn’t stop us winning.”
Davis said his family and Maskell were incredibly happy and excited about his recent win.
“(My family) love it, they were over the moon for me ... Scott was probably the loudest one there, he was probably just as excited as I was if not more,” he said.
The partnership between Davis and Maskell stretches back many moons.
The emerging talent started training with Maskell several years ago after he began boxing and mixed martial arts classes.
After his recent title win, he has big plans to go bigger and compete interstate in national competitions, which can help him turn professional.
“I want to go to the Australian titles next year in Townsville, I went in 2009 and I came away with a bronze, this time I want gold,“ Davis said.
“After that, I think I’ll look at turning professional ...there’s a fair bit of difference to it, but you get paid as well.”
