Mathoura Timbercutters senior coach Adam Bourke said while the team is not happy with the loss against Katunga last week, the scoreboard didn’t fairly reflect the team’s performance - even though the 133 point loss saw them concede the lowest score against them this season.
“Look, we’re really disappointed with the result.
“However, once again, the scoreboard doesn’t truly reflect the performance that we put in on Saturday.
“To Katunga’s credit, they kept us to one goal and one behind.
“In parts, we controlled the ball for periods of the game, and we had more inside 50s than we’ve had all year.
“It is tough for our midfielders and defenders when we’re losing hitouts and clearances.
“I thought our defenders worked incredibly hard in our defensive 50.
“It was one goal to two at the start of the third quarter.
“We then let them kick three or four at the end of the third quarter, and we’ve just been letting teams runaway at the end of quarters, which hurts us when we have these opportunities.
“We need to make the most of our chances. We had one set shot from 35m straight in front that missed and went out on the full.
Bourke said the attention turns straight away to their game at home against Rennie tomorrow.
Rennie has had one win for the season, but that came against Mathoura’s previous opponent, Katunga.
“We hope to be more competitive and show a little bit more against Rennie this week. We’ve had some good signs.”
“Again, we’re really excited about the chance to perform not just for 25 minutes in a quarter but for four quarters.
“That starts with winning hitouts, clearances and reducing turnovers. We’re hoping to put in a good effort and looking to improve this weekend, and that starts in the midfield.”
Mathoura Football Netball Club said the other highlight for the club this weekend is its sportman’s night on Saturday, from 7pm at the Moama Bolwing Club.
Titled ‘A Salute To Bravery’, special guests are AFL legend Kevin Sheedy and Doug Baird OAM, whose son Cameron was killed in action while serving in Afghanistan and received the Victoria Cross.
“The sportsman’s night is a really important event, and we extend an invitation to all the other clubs and communities around the region.
“Kevin Sheedy is the MC, and has a lot of experience in terms of rebuilding clubs and volunteerism.
“We’ve been selling tickets with a two-course meal for $100, but there are also tickets for $50 just to attend. We’ve got 100 of those tickets left,” he said on Wednesday
