Tungamah have two wins and three losses, with their losses coming in games against Katamatite, Katandra and Katunga.
Their wins came against Strathmerton and Rennie.
Despite their record, the Bears have finished in the finals for the last few years and also have the reigning league best-and-fairest, Sam Ferguson.
In comparison, Mathoura is one of three teams winless so far after five rounds. Other winless teams are Blighty and Rennie.
Reflecting on last week’s match against Dookie United, Mathoura senior football coach Adam Bourke said the Cutters came out of the gates and were on top early but failed to maintain momentum.
“We thought we started really well, trying to be more competitive, and 10 minutes in we were up two goals to one.
“However, the main thing that affected us was losing the ball in transition.
“After our start, they kicked three quick goals.
“We could’ve kicked some more, but we had some missed opportunities we didn’t take, like hitting our targets inside forward-50, but I felt we were really competitive up and until that point. There was a slight breeze their way in the first quarter.
“They ended up putting one back in the second quarter, which showed we were competitive.
“From there we haven’t been consistent enough, whereas go back a week against Waaia, and we were competitive for the first three quarters.”
Ahead of this week’s game, Bourke said his team is focused on “what they need to do to develop”, tackling the challenges in front of them head-on.
“We understand Tungamah are a good, strong, solid, slick team.
“We’re looking forward to these challenges and take on the call for us to be more consistent.
“Our players have to put a bit more pressure on the ball carrier, and we know we’ve got work to do on fitness and skills.
“We’re not worried by the scoreboard. The metrics we’re looking at are more tackles, turnovers and free kicks.
“If we get some of those things right, the scoreboard will look after itself.”
Bourke said the Cutters’ game plan against Tungamah is shaping up, and there is optimism about the team’s first win.
“We’d love to be planning about what other teams are doing, but we need to focus on what we’re doing, get those things right and make those small improvements.
“We’re always looking for our first win as a side, which is what you have to do in our position; we’re always going in looking at the positives.
“We know we’re still developing and a long way from competing with the very best sides, but we’ll continue to give it our best and develop from it.”
