Disappointment to delight

What could have been a total disaster for the Deniliquin Racing Club on Saturday turned into a day for all to enjoy.

DRC president Greg Danckert said the committee and volunteers were extremely happy with the number of people who came to the racecourse for a social gathering following the racing itself being cancelled the previous day.

“The day turned out really successful, due mainly to the people supporting it,” Mr Danckert said.

Around 600 to 700 people turned out in slightly overcast conditions, with a very soggy ground to meet up, socialise, participate in activities and enjoy the facilities.

Mr Danckert said some of the organised entertainment was not able to be provided, including the big screen to watch metropolitan races on, due to “being flooded in", but those that were able to make the day were very well patronised.

“People who booked the private marquees came, the Fashions on the Field was a big hit, and I’d like to thank the sponsors for that,” he said.

“It turned out to be a fun, social day of mixing and mingling.

“What could have been a disaster turned out well.”

Mr Danckert said that patrons had plenty to keep them engaged and many enjoyed the betting and bar facilities, to the point that the on-site bookie ran out of paper at one stage.

“The club is really appreciative of everyon who came out and supported us on Saturday,” Mr Danckert said.
