Division 4 remain un-defeated

Graeme Gordon carefully executes his shot for Division 4 on Saturday.

All of the Deniliquin RSL Bowling Club’s round seven Campaspe Valley Bowls Association weekend pennant games were played at Deniliquin on Saturday.

Division 4 maintained its un-defeated status against Tongala, while Division 2 went down to Echuca.

In Division 4, one rink won comfortably and the other played a draw.

RSL was up overall by 10 shots — 38-28.

Jim Jenning’s team of Bruce Ferry, Neville Austin and Lindsay Dalzell took a while to shake off a determined Tongala side.

Leading 13-10 after 15 ends, they then took five of the remaining six ends to run out comfortable winners by 10 shots — 21-11.

John Wilson, Graeme Gordon, Paul Connor and Justine Bourchier were locked in a tight battle all day in their game.

Leading 17-14 after 20 ends, Tongala grabbed three shots on the final end to force a draw, at 17-all.

Echuca won overall by 11 shots in Division 2, winning on two of the three rinks.

Bruce Clancy, Ron Marchetti, Brian Clancy and Allan Hodges provided the only joy for RSL on the day.

They were leading 12 to nil after six ends, only to see Echuca fight back strongly to level at 15-all after 15 ends.

In a dramatic finish, Clancy — known as ‘The Last End Specialist’ — added his final bowl to the count to give his team four shots.

It resulted in a one shot victory, 22-21.

Tony Tonta and his grouping of Jenny Tonta, Cheryl Bradley and Miro Peterman were locked with Echuca at 10-all after 14 ends.

But Echuca finished the stronger, taking six of the remaining eight ends for a seven shot victory, 19-12.

Archie Webster, Wayne Bradley, Peter Liefting and Ian McKenzie appeared to be heading for a massive defeat, down 18-1 after 11 ends.

To their credit they fought their way back, taking the six of the next seven ends and 16 shots to add some respectability to the scoreline.

Echuca won with 22 shots to Deni’s 17.
