Greta 6-3 11-7 15-10 19-11 125
A new-look Goorambat side under new coach Ben Wapling got its season under way against a very good team in Greta at Greta on Saturday. Greta, which had its first game the week, started off strongly.
Ben Reaburn was playing a great game up forward and was shifted back and continued contributing for the team, with support from John House doing his job down back.
Sully Malay was in everything at ground level and Angus Burston for his first senior game for Goorambat was doing a great job in the ruck, and the boys improved as the game went on.
Next week the boys have their first home game of the season with a few still to come into the side. They know the areas they need to work on which should give them confidence to get their first win of the season.
Best players: Ben Reaburn (Peter Davis Rural). John House (Goorambat Hotel). Sully Malay (Hollywood Pizza). Angus Burston (Saint James Hotel). Braydon Wapling, Jamie Dunne.
Goals: Brush Haebich 4, Braydon Stepien 2, Sam Gladstone 1.
A-grade
Bats 16, Greta 68
Goorambat A-grade had a rough start against an always in-form Greta. New shooting combination of Jasmine Martin and Kylie Relf had their work cut out for them against Greta defenders, but showed great promise.
Georgia Thomson and Nikki Wallace had an outstanding day in defence, getting plenty of turnovers and deflections, and earning a spot in the bests.
Overall, not the start we wanted but gave the girls lots to work on.
Awards: First: Georgia Thomson — Di’s Diamond Cleaning & Gardening Services Award.
Second: Nikki Wallace — Bill Bo Pop Award.
Third: Jasmine Martin — Maccas Sharpening & Mowing Services Award.
Reserves
G Bat 2-0 2-0 2-0 2-1 13
Greta 2-3 4-7 10-10 13-14 92
A much-improved reserves side came up against Greta on its home ground for its first game of the season, and got off to a great start, kicking two early goals in the game and catching Greta by surprise.
Robert Wilson and Nathan Holmes were both playing great games, giving the boys plenty of opportunities up forward, with Nathan happy with the effort at quarter-time.
The boys played some good football but left themselves down at times with their disposal, and weren’t able to put points on the scoreboard and hopefully this will improve week by week going forward.
Best players: Robert Wilson (Bouwmeesters Bakery). Nathan Holmes (Royal Hotel). Henry Sadaya (Sportspower). Josh Heylbat (Macca’s Sharpening & Mowing Services). Grayson Kirk (Subway Eat Fresh), Brenton Doig.
Goals: Josh Stacey 1, Rob Wilson 1.
B-grade
Greta 42 vs Goorambat 23
With a fresh-looking team this year, we welcomed back some past and new players.
Lisa Johnson and Aneiki Pierce took a little bit of time to find their feet, and showed some great movement in the goaling ring. Defenders Fiona Doig and Madeleine Thomas combined well and created ample opportunities. Tiffany Kirkpatrick gave great drive and feeding along with defensive pressure. Fellow midcourters Elise Nolan, Molly Doidge and Alyssa Priest also showed great control and structure. Second quarter saw a more capitalised quarter sticking with Greta. Olivia Hayes was a pleasant introduction into the goal ring and showed great accuracy and technique. Bats took a lot away from the game and have plenty to work with.
Awards: First: Tiffany Kirkpatrick — Royal Hotel Award.
Second: Fiona Doig — Jenny Milner Award.
Third: Olivia Hayes — Rambling Rose Award.
B-reserve
Greta 60 vs Goorambat 25
B-reserve went down to a strong Greta side. Considering this is the first time the team has played together, it worked well and has shown great potential for the year. Abby Hammond and Ella Woods moved well together in the ring and were well supported by their mid-courters, Grace Handley and Carissa Parrant, who worked hard all game to bring the ball down the court. As a club we are excited to see where this team can go.
Awards: First: Abby Hammond — Sportspower Award.
Second: Grace Handley — Terry White Chemist Award.
Third: Ella woods — Subway Award.

Under-15s
Greta 52 vs Goorambat 1
It was a cold and rainy morning on Saturday. The girls arrived in Greta at 9am, ready to warm up for their first game. They knew it would be a tough game against the reigning premiers. When the first whistle blew, they immediately put in 100 per cent effort and carried that on throughout the whole game. First-year players Amali Mackenzie and Ruby Davis as well as Amelia Feldtmann put in a strong defensive performance against Greta’s shooters. Pippa Martin and Yolanda Bourke used continuous teamwork in the attacking third throughout the game. Willow Hamill, Ella Hogan and Amelia Keen all showed impressive support across the whole court.
