Goulburn Valley claims fifth regional title
Kyabram and district players have pulled their weight helping the Goulburn Valley region claim its fifth Victorian Inter-Regional Country Tennis Championship in the last six years.
Star veteran performers, Kyabram’s David Starling and Stanhope’s Judy Buzza, enjoyed a strong 66th annual state tournament held at Horsham.
They combined to win the 50-and-over mixed doubles crown and Starling also paired with Numurkah’s Colin McKay to take the men’s doubles title.
Starling and Buzza were also runners-up in their singles events.
Starling’s 10-year-old son Kade also displayed plenty of promise at the tournament.
He paired with Tess Bassett to win the 12-and-under mixed doubles consolation, cruising into the final with a 6-0 win but then pushed all the way in the decider which then won 7-6.
Kade also finished runner-up in the boys’ consolation singles.
Kade’s sister Taylor also competed for another region short on players in the 12-and-under girls’ events.
While Jinaya Nurse was a major winner her mother Fleur and sister Tanesha also did their bit for the Goulburn region cause.
Fleur claimed the ladies’ consolation singles in the 30 to 49 age group while Tanesha reached the semi-finals in the girls’ 16-and-under mixed doubles.
