Representing the Riverina, the Deniliquin North Public School Year 4 student competed at the NSW PSSA Girls Football Championships from Tuesday to Thursday last week.
Held at Goonellabah, just outside Lismore, the Riverina players travelled the length of the state to the northern coast of NSW to compete.
Havana was the youngest member of the Riverina team competing in the open primary public schools girls competition, with other students predominantly from Wagga and Albury.
Riverina drew two of their matches and were defeated in the other five games, but put up a great fight with low scores against them.
The team came 12th out of 14 teams representing regions across NSW.
Havana’s dad Diego Sztejman said the Riverina team got great experience, defying expectations against teams from across the state.
“It was a fantastic three days. The organisation of the competition was on point,” he said.
“It was supposed to be in Ballina, but because of the rain before the tournament they moved it.
“Altogether there were 14 teams. The Riverina team lost 1-0 to the Hunter region team, who ended up winning the championship.
“The girls gave great fight. Last year they came 14th out of 14 teams, so it was good to see improvement there.
“Havana was the youngest one there, most of the kids competing were in Year 6 - including nine girls in her team.”
Havana played in the left wing position as an attacker.
Diego said the team played well, but couldn’t make the most of their scoring opportunities against high-quality sides.
“The Sydney teams are always strong. The Riverina side got good shots on goal, but the team couldn’t capitalise.
“It was a great experience for her and motivation for the next time to make herself and her teammates better.
“She’s excited to try out and give it another go next year.”
