Young Deniliquin bowler Monique Crothers has been selected to play in the inaugural Bowling Premier League junior competition.
Monique is ten years old, loves bowling and is good at it.
Playing weekend pennant with the Deniliquin Bowling Club, she’s on the opposite end of the age scale to most people she plays with and against locally.
Her dedication to the sport saw her recognised for her skills on the green as a junior bowler last year.
For the Bowling Premier League junior competition, Monique will wear the Moama Steamers team colours.
The competition will be hosted at the Moama Bowling Club on February 23.
The junior competition is for bowlers under the age of 18 and follows a similar format to the senior competition, which is in its 21st season of operation as a competition.
The concept of the league is not unlike the T20 Big Bash cricket competition in that it has franchises or teams with players from all over Australia, and even some international players.
The Moama Steamers are among 12 teams registered for the tournament.
There are also teams based in Adelaide, the Gold Coast, Melbourne, Sydney and Tasmania.
The idea for this particular junior event was born out of a shared desire from the Sunbury and Moama bowling clubs to have more events for junior bowlers throughout the year.
“It was great to see Monique qualify, along with Todd Brain and Josh Cartwright,” Moama Bowling Club greens venue manager Stuart White said.
“She played well throughout selections with some big bowls in the final.
“The Junior BPL Challenge will be played alongside the BPL teams, with the final being livestreamed through Bowls Australia before the finals series starts with the main teams.
“There will be 12 sides in the Junior BPL Challenge, with every franchise sponsoring a team.
“This is a national competition played on the biggest stage.”
