Polocrosse is a sport played on horseback that incorporates elements of polo, lacrosse and netball.
“I guess it is like lacrosse on a horse, and it is played on kind of like a soccer pitch,” Gray said.
She has been playing the sport for eight years and her latest state team call up is her fourth of her young career, and she has had to keep it quiet for a while.
“I got the email about two months ago that I had been selected, but I had to keep it to myself until it was officially announced,” Gray said.
The goal shooter, or number one as they call it in Polocrosse, plays for Canberra based side Braidwood and has ambitions of representing Australia.
“I am aiming for the Australian team, I have made the squad before, but I haven’t played an actual game yet.”
Gray says her performances in a state competition in Queensland likely sealed her place in this year's NSW side.
“There was another state competition in Queensland and I just sort of ripped it there and that was one where the big selectors were there.”
A big part of the sport is the bond between horse and rider, and Indiana has spent years developing and training her horse, Asar Intrigue.
“I have had her for about six years.
“When I first got her, she was pretty fried I guess, and I had to do a lot of basic training.
“I didn’t even use her for Polocrosse the first year or so.”
The training paid off, and now Gray couldn't imagine riding another horse.
“She’s the best, she pretty much knows the ins and outs of it all,” she said.
Out of the saddle, Gray is busy studying Sport and Exercise Science at La Trobe University in Bendigo, with one eye on becoming an equine physio.
She says family support and the support she gets at uni means work and play dovetail well.
“I'm part of the athlete program at Uni, so that just gives me a lot of flexibility.”
And Gray has a message for any potential sponsors out there.
“Mum and Dad have pretty much paid for everything so far, so yes, I am very much open to any sponsors who would like to get on board.”
The 2026 Australian Polocrosse National Championships take place in Darwin from June 22 through to June 28.
