Record Autumn Classic field

Major event winners Craig Manning (left) and Ross Taylor.

Deniliquin Golf Club hosted one of its most successful Autumn Classics at the weekend.

There were record fields for the event, sponsored by the Purtill Group and Wired Entertainment.

In the major 36 hole event the men’s winners were Ross Taylor and Craig Manning with 36 points, and the ladies winners were Felicity McCalman and Colleen Henderson with 36. The men’s runners-up were Chris Clark and Graham Chick with 89, and ladies runners-up were Sue Hancock and Prue Chalmers on 84.

Saturday ladies winners Marg Rothwell (left) and Prue Grant.

Men’s scratch winners were Matt Thomas and Jarod Somerfeld with 80 points, and ladies scratch went to Ginnie Lange and Vicki Hutton on 52.

On Saturday the men’s winners were Warren Bull and Greg Collins who had 49 points to defeat John Penna and Ken Wemyss with 45, and in the ladies Prue Grant and Marg Rothwell had 43, winning by a shot to Margie Radeski and Jane Armytage.

On Sunday the men’s winners were Darin and Vene Mitchell with 48, from Thomas Bult and Peter Thompson on 46, and in the ladies Jayne Barlow and Annette McIntyre had 43, from runners-up Denise Hunter and Sue Butcher 40.

It was a great weekend and bodes well for the Winter Classic to be held on the long weekend in June.

Last Thursday the ladies had a stableford event, with Shandra Simpson winning A grade on countback to Vicki Brunker with 36 points, and Chris Maw winning B grade on countback to Annette McIntyre with 32.

On Wednesday the A grade winner was Daryl Nalder with 38 points, from John Penna 37, and in B grade Russell Begg had 39 from runner-up Ray Phillips 36.

Tomorrow is a single stableford, then on Monday we will host the GV Vets which will attract golfers from throughout the Goulburn Valley. A strong contingent of Deniliquin golfers compete in GV Vets events and we look forward to welcoming our visitors once a year.

On Tuesday the ladies have a 9 holes secret six, with the regular men’s stableford event on Wednesday and ladies single stableford on Thursday.

The first round of the Club Championships will be played on Saturday March 26, with the final two rounds on April 2 and 9. The ladies will play round one of their championships on Thursday March 31.

Entries are also being accepted for the annual Corporate Golf Day on Friday May 13. This is a major fundraiser for the club each year and is always a great day and evening. The dinner guest speaker this year will be former AFL footballer and businessman Tony Morwood. Get your team organised for this four person ambrose event.

Friday Night Fun continues at the club tonight. Raffle tickets are on sale from 6pm with draws at 7.30pm. Excellent meals are available, with bookings preferred. If you want a lift, call the club and order the courtesy bus.

Finally, a reminder regarding golf etiquette. The rules state that “players should always show consideration for other players on the course and should not disturb their play by moving, talking or making unnecessary noise. Players should not stand close to or directly behind the ball, or directly behind the hole, when a player is about to play.” Please take note of these rules.
