Rhinos name two debutantes

Dean MacDonald was presented his cap, which signified his call up to A-grade for the first time, from Charlie Hillier.

The Deni Rhinos took to the field against Barooga for 45 overs on Saturday in the resumption of the Murray Valley Cricket Association after the Christmas break.

This match was a catchup game from round two, when neither club had an available wicket.

The Rhinos had plenty of changes with captain Brodie Bennett, Evan Pocock, Jake Herberte, Jack Tonta and Tom McCallum all unavailable.

Dean MacDonald (wicket keeper) and Charlie Paton (left handed bat and left arm orthodox spinner) were both selected to debut in the A-grade line up as a result.

Also coming into the team were Liam Pitts, Kai Hillier and Mitch Jefferies.

Pitts was named captain for the day.

The Rhinos won the toss and had no hesitation in batting on the excellent Barooga pitch.

Barooga struck early when Boddie Arthur nicked the ball off the left arm quick, Will Sharpe, and the keeper held the catch.

Manraj Virdi was looking good until he also nicked one to the keeper.

Kale Watkins was bowling his higher pace off breaks with little scoring opportunities for the Rhinos.

Harry Hillier and Liam Pitts started to get the innings going, taking the score to 38.

Pitts took on the Barooga attack but was caught at deep mid wicket.

Kai Hillier joined his brother and the pair navigated the Rhinos to 3-43 at drinks.

The drinks break did not help the concentration of the Rhinos batters.

Johno Oliver bowled Harry Hillier with a full delivery.

Kai Hillier tried to break up the close in field but missed the big shot off Brendan Lewis.

Lewis took his third wicket bowling Mitch Jefferies two balls later.

The Rhinos had lost 3-0 and had slumped to 6-52.

Noah Bradley was adjudged LBW to Oliver.

Lachlan Holloway and first gamer, Charlie Paton, batted well and looked comfortable.

The pair added 21 for the eighth wicket.

The introduction of the tall medium Mitchell Richmann had immediate results, bowling Holloway for 11 runs.

Richmann struck again having Prem Reddy LBW.

Dean MacDonald was bowled by Oliver and the Rhinos were dismissed for 85.

Charlie Paton finished unbeaten on 15.

The Rhinos were disappointed only batting for 32 overs.

The Rhinos started their bowling and fielding with plenty of enthusiasm.

Prem Reddy and Kai Hillier took the new ball.

Unfortunately Kai Hillier lost his footing and was only able to bowl two overs.

Reddy bowled excellent line and length and was moving the ball around.

He struck in the fifth over, Richmann bowled for one.

Reddy struck again the seventh over, with Jamie Stanyer caught by Virdi at mid off for six.

The sharp catch by Virdi had Barooga at 2-13.

The Rhinos needed to strike regularly, but the Barooga batters were solid and did not lose another wicket before overtaking the Rhinos score.

Zac Moore took the Rhinos bowlers on, finishing on 46 not out with three sixes and five fours.

Nathan Gossayn was very solid, also unbeaten on 23.

Barooga won the game by eight wickets and 25 overs in hand.

The Rhinos play the undefeated Cobram this weekend in an 80 over, two day game.

Charlie Paton receives his cap from Rhinos stalwart Anthony Bradley.
