Deniliquin RSL’s Division 5 bowlers have tasted Campaspe Bowls premiership glory following a thrilling grand final victory at Mathoura on Saturday.
RSL defeated Moama 47-40, with one rink win apiece.
Division 4 also met the Moama Steamers for the grand final on Saturday, but in that match up Deni were denied the flag.
The club congratulates all bowlers on a great year of success, growth and enjoyment.
Division 5:
John Wilson (s), Neville Austin, Ron Marchetti and Callan Glenn were well placed at 11-14 after 13 ends, but Moama were too strong over the remainder of the contest.
They took six of the remaining eight ends while accumulating 14 shots for a comprehensive victory.
Moama 25 def RSL 17.
Bruce Ferry (s), Robyn Ferry, James Rhook and Peter Todd led all day on their rink and at 22-7 on the thirteenth ends they looked in complete control.
Moama won the next six ends to chip away at their lead, but RSL regained the ascendency to take the game 30-15.
Overall proceedings were far from over.
With the neighbouring game complete and Ferry’s rink about to commence their final end, the premiership was in the balance.
RSL held a slender overall lead, 41-40.
Magnificent team bowling saw RSL score an emphatic six to claim the premiership for the club.
It was an amazing ending, fully appreciated by a large group of supporters present.
RSL 30 def Moama 15.
Division 4:
RSL played Moama at Mathoura, with Moama winning on both rinks.
It resulted in an overall score of 47-30, handing Moama the grand final silverware.
Bruce Clancy (s), Peter Liefting, Sandra Hill and Peter Thommers fought back after being down 20-8 half way through the contest.
They took the next five ends and eight shots to close the gap.
With shots being shared over the closing stages of the game they were unable to make further inroads.
Moama 26 def RSL 20.
Jim Jennings (s) and his team of Graeme Gordon, Brian Clancy and Ron Hulme struggled throughout on their rink.
They were still in the game at 10-13 after 15 ends but Moama were much more consistent over the closing stages, taking eight shots over the final eight ends.
Moama 21 def RSL 10.
Commiserations to our players, but congratulations on a very consistent season.
Club sides are sure to challenge again in 2024.
