The day will start with the juniors, with the Hay Whipper Snippers heading across to Deniliquin for the launch.
This is in celebration of the number of Deniliquin players who make up the Hay sides, and on the suggestion of Snippers coach and Deniliquin Drovers Rugby Union Club president Paul Marshall.
“We thought it was a great way to let other local children interested in the code to get involved,” Marshall said.
“Existing players and anyone new can come and experience what rugby is all about.
“We’ll have some fun training sessions for five to 14 year-olds from 11am at Deniliquin Rotary Park.
“We’ll talk about pathways in the Snippers for those interested, and of course to the Deni Drovers later on if they continue playing.”
The junior training sessions will be followed by a barbecue lunch for the children, where more information about playing the season will be available.
More information about playing the season will be available at this time.
Marshall said further junior programs would then be hosted in Deniliquin over the coming weeks, starting Tuesday.
The Get Into Rugby program is similar to Auskick for AFL.
“It will be run in Deni and gives kids here and outer areas a chance to learn the skills of the game,” Marshall said.
“It is open to anyone, regardless of whether they intend to play with the Whipper Snippers this year or not.
“It will be run over a 10 to 12 week period, and girls and boys are encouraged to take part.
“This program is available to those age five to 12 - so primary school age.”
Deniliquin’s junior rugby players, including Marshall’s own son Tom, play with the Hay Whipper Snippers because there are not sufficient numbers to run a local junior Drovers program.
Saturday’s junior training session will be followed in the afternoon by the Deniliquin Drovers seniors launch and training session at Rotary Park.
Marshall said the club is pleased to confirm it will be fielding a first grade team in the Southern Inland Rugby Union competition this year.
He said the club has had to recruit players from outside Deniliquin to field a team, with most coming from Moama and Tongala.
