Continuing their momentum from an inspiring win against Mooroopna last week, the Lions were at their scintillating best on both sides of the court in what was undoubtedly their most impressive performance of the year.
Speaking after the victory, Seymour coach Ellie O’Sullivan said her team had hit a sweet spot and was really enjoying its netball.
“I was really excited with our team’s performance and we spoke at half-time and just said how much we were enjoying our time on court,” O’Sullivan said.
“Echuca is such a good club and they put in a great performance, but I think the key for us was that we were just having fun and I think that really added to our attacking flair and defensive intensity.”
With stars all over the court, O’Sullivan said the improved chemistry among the girls had been a real highlight of the Lions’ improved play in the past fortnight.
“I felt the game was really similar to the Mooroopna game last week. I think we are starting to find a bit of flow on court, which is really nice,” she said.
“Our timing was really good on the weekend. We are finding that really good connection between teammates and it’s leading to an exciting brand of netball.”
In what was a very well-balanced performance from the entire Seymour squad, there were a couple of players that really stood out, showcasing the incredible depth at O’Sullivan’s disposal.
“I was really impressed with Olivia Barry on the weekend. She has been a player that has been in and out of our side and she stepped on court and was just incredible,” she said.
“Sarah Szczykulski had another ripper game. She has brought another level of energy this season and has taken her game to new heights so far this season.”
The win sees Seymour climb to the top of the GVL A-grade ladder after five rounds, with a trip to Kyabram on the horizon next weekend.
The Lions didn’t taste the same success in B-grade, falling 50-49 in a thriller on the Kings Park courts.
Seymour’s first loss of the 2022 season was a case of so close, yet so far for the home side in what was a fantastic display of B-grade netball.
Bridie Cantwell celebrated her 50th game and was excellent connecting with the Lions’ attackers, while Georgia Engel was voted best-on-court after a dominant defensive performance.
B-reserve action saw Seymour on the right side of a thriller, triumphing 43-40.
Casey Drummond was best-on-court with an eye-catching attacking performance, while Sophie Rutherford was a workhorse at both ends, creating turnovers and standing up under immense pressure.
The junior clashes saw Echuca go away with two victories, triumphing 55-35 in the under-17s and 33-27 in the under-15s.
