Murphy is a spin bowler from Moama with ties to the Mathoura area.
Australian captain Pat Cummins was reluctant to reveal the playing lineup when questioned on Wednesday, but did say Murphy was “as prepared as he could be.”
Murphy made the trip to India along side three other spin bowlers - Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson.
To become the 465th man to wear the baggy green he will have to rely on Australia bucking the trend of a 35 year tradition, since Australia selected two specialist off-spinners for a test match.
Tim May and Peter Taylor were the last spin pair to gain selection during the 1988 tour of Pakistan.
In defining his ability Sydney Sixers teammate Steve O’Keefe told foxsports.com.au, “he’s as good an off-spinner as I’ve seen since Nathan Lyon”.
Given his similarities to Lyon, selectors may have be reluctant to play two spinners which may delay him earning the baggy green.
But Cummins told foxsports.com.au that “all offers are on the table to partner Gaz if we go with two spinners”, still leaving the door ajar for Murphy.
“It’s going to come down to pitch conditions and what they feel their best combinations are ... (but) there’s no reason you couldn’t play two right-arm off-spinners over there if conditions suited,” Murphy told cricket.com.au about his possible place in the side.
Murphy made his A list debut on March 10, 2021 for Victoria in the 2020-21 Marsh One Day Cup.
His first class debut came next on April 3, 2021 for Victoria in the 2020-21 Sheffield Shield season.
He then made his Twenty20 debut on December 26 2021 for the Sydney Sixes in the 2021-22 Big Bash League season.
