It’s a tell tale sign that someone is getting prepared for the day’s fun and fishing.
Yet again the local waterways are proving to be the best in the area.
Over the past month I have had a few fishos from as far away as South Australia and Canberra message me and ask how the river is fishing, and where they should be camping and staying around town.
And I have been getting positive feedback on how their stay was in and around town.
The rivers have been fishing exceptionally well over the past month, with numerous big cod caught on lures and bait around town.
Jack Weymouth Smith from Griffith was fishing the Edward around the Moonaculla area and was excited to land himself a 107cm cod, casting a Legohead lure.
A couple of Australian fishing gurus have also been fishing the same area with great success.
Colby Lesko and Lubin Pfeiffer who both have a huge social media following have been casting away in our local rivers, and turning up some great fish.
Colby managed to hook into a solid cod of about 106cm, casting the Balista hunchback surface lure, and plenty of smaller ones as well.
It’s great to see the youngsters getting involved too.
I’m seeing more and more popping up on social media with their new PBs, first fish on a lure and so on.
One of these youngsters, Luke Holloway, landed his new PB Murray cod casting an 80mm kingfisher surface lure below the weir.
Luke’s cod measured in at 110cm. Well done, Luke.
Luke has also caught a few sizeable cod on bait up to 70cm.
Lily Westcott caught her first cod casting a lure over the weekend.
Lily hooked into three cod, her biggest going 70cm - a new PB for Lily.
Tom Wallace also landed his PB cod of around 60cm.
Dean and Jake Herberte haven’t missed out catching a good haul of cod, fishing below and above the weir on both surface and diving lures.
Pete, Cam and Brodie Wills, along with Isaac Behsman, caught nearly every fish in a 500m stretch recently fishing in the Wakool River.
In one session, the group caught 17 cod, casting hardbodied and surface lures.
They backed it up again the following week with another 12 cod, with Isaac landing a healthy 70cm - the biggest for the trip.
Tim Rose finally got out for a stroll along the Wakool River, which resulted in four nice cod in the 60cm range - three on surface and one on a hardbodied lure.
Tim Maher has also been stirring up the fish, with a few smaller models and a cracking 70cm specimen taken on his trusty 90mm Basko diver.
Leigh and Koby Westcott spent a couple of days in town fishing and were rewarded with a few nice cod up around the 60cm mark, and a huge silver perch which Koby caught casting a 100mm Oargee plow.
Brett and his son Isaac Suckling have been getting a few bust ups around town particularly around the BIG4 area.
The pair have reeled in some nice cod up to 80cm trolling deep diving lures.
The Easter break will be busy on the water, so take care and be thoughtful of others when out camping or boating. And be sure to take your rubbish home with you.
It’s hard at the moment to give any tips on the best spots to fish, because there are so many fish being caught all throughout the river system.
Whether it be in the heart of town, out near the weir or out past the Four Post, just get out and enjoy your time fishing.
Hopefully you’ll be rewarded with some fish and some great memories.
