The top two teams of the Deniliquin Lawn Tennis Club’s twilight competition cemented their spots on the ladder heading into the final round before finals.

In round nine of competition last week, Wednesday tennis followed the script with teams playing to their position on the ladder.

It resulted in no change to the leaders.

Leading team Mitre 10 played Deniliquin Newsagency and won 14 sets and 125 games to Newsagency 10 sets and 90 games.

After a tied first round, the second round of matches saw Mitre 10 win five of eight sets.

In the third round of sets they repeated the dose winning five sets to three.

Georgie Perrignon, Naomi Ritchie, James Osborne and Benjy Pisasale all won their three sets for Mitre 10.

For the Newsagency, Hugh Landale and Leah Wiernik won their three sets.

Second placed Legal Eagles took on third placed Peppin Planners.

The result was a 14-10 win to The Eagles, by 115 games to 98.

After four sets each in round one, the Eagles showed their dominance in round two winning six of the eight sets.

Eagles won four out of five men’s sets and two out of three ladies sets.

The third round was again shared four sets each.

Heading into the last round tomorrow, Mitre 10 is on 103 sets followed by Legal Eagles 100 sets, Peppin on 79 and Deni Newsagency on 53.

For finals next week, the first and second placed teams will play off and there will be a match between the third and fourth placed teams.

At the end of the night prizes will be awarded to the winning team, and also to the best individual players. This is decided by the best individual number of games won over the competition.

There will be an expected 27 sets to be played between the two leading teams, Mitre 10 and Legal Eagles.

It will be a fair contest to see which team wins the spring competition.

Players are asked to nominate themselves on the sheets provided for autumn twilight tennis, which is set to begin on Wednesday, February 1.

The autumn competition will end one week before Easter.
