Two out of three ain’t bad for RSL Diggers

Wins on the road for Division 2 and 3 offset Division 4 going down at home to Moama in the second round of Campaspe Saturday Pennant bowls.

Division 2

In a tight tussle against Tongala, at Tongala, the game finished with the Diggers up on one rink, down on another and grabbing a tie in the third game

All of which left RSL up by four shots – 60/56.

Linda Harris with lead Ty Thurlow, Danny Stanmore and Trent Walton played out a thrilling draw. In a tense struggle they grabbed the lead 26/20 after scoring seven shots in two ends, only to see Tongala reciprocate and take six shots on the final two ends to tie the game.

RSL/ Tongala – tied 26 all

Craig Taylor (s), Jenny Tonta, Chris Frampton and Jo King were locked in a tight struggle for their game, leading by a single shot after the 15th end. However, from that point on they exerted their dominance, scoring 10 shots to one in the remaining ends for an emphatic victory.

RSL 23/Tongala 13

Tony Tonta (s), Gary Koopman, Ian McKenzie and Garry Hulm were tied 13-all on the 13th end but Tongala showed greater composure from that point on to take the match.

Division 3

Played Rochester at Rochester

RSL won overall by eight shots – 64\56 – despite only winning on one of the three rinks.

Tony King (s), James Rhook, Lindsay Dalzell and Alan Hodges started slowly and on the 13th end were trailing 7/18. A great comeback followed and they finished full of fight with eight shots on the final two ends, but not enough to snatch the match.

Rochester 22/RSL 20

Rod Reid, Cheryl Bradley, Paul Connor and Ron Hulme had the best result of the day with a solid victory. Down 4/14 after 13 ends, they totally dominated the remainder of the match, winning all final eight ends and accumulating a further 14 shots.

RSL 25/Rochester 14

Wayne Bradley (s), Jim Jennings, Sandra Hill and Tyler Hillier led 16/7 at the halfway point, but then lost their momentum, giving up 12 shots in the next six ends. At 19 all on the final end it was Rochester who claimed the vital shot for victory

Division 4

Played Moama at Deniliquin RSL

Moama won overall by eight shots – 54/62 – as well as winning on two of the three rinks.

John Wilson (s), Graeme Gordon, Ron Marchetti and Niels Hilton (in his debut) were in the game, trailing by just 2 shots at 10/12 after thirteen ends. Moama proved the steadier over the closing ends, picking up 12 shots to 5 for the win.

Moama 24/RSL 15

Neville Austin (s), Peter Liefting. Ian Chessells, and Darcy Nilsson (leading in his first pennant game) played out a thrilling draw. In a tense struggle they grabbed the lead 18/12 with four ends to play, only to see Tongala take eight shots on the final three ends to win by a single shot.

Moama 20/RSL 19

Bruce Ferry (s), Bruce Clancy, Ken Bowden and Ella Hipworth provided the highlight of the day for RSL with a great one shot victory. They led 19/10 with seven ends to play but Moama took the next six ends to trail by a single shot on the last end. RSL steadied and scored two for a great win.

Congratulations to Danny Stanmore on his win over Paul Connor in President’s handicap final held during last week.

A Grade championship games started last Sunday so watch the noticeboard for draws and arrangements and keep up to date with games.

Congratulations to Neils Hilton in his debut game with the club last Saturday and to young Darcy Nilsson, who played his first senior pennant game.

Special mention to Ron Hulme who played in his first pennant winning rink. Well done Ron.
