Despite having the home ground advantage, only two of the Redeyes’ netball teams managed to come away with the win.
A grade: The A grade side slogged it out all game, but the effort was not reflected in the score. Waaia trounced the home side, 57 to 15.
Blighty coach Meagan Lowry said it was a great effort for the newly formed team who had some great play down the court.
‘‘We never gave up and as a new team we can only get better,’’ she said.
Awards: Emmy Weir, Abbey Coleman and Taylor Wilkinson.
B grade: The B grade match also resulted in a loss for Blighty, who managed only 22 to Waaia’s 60.
Coach Elly Blake commended the team’s strong defence, attack and midcourt play throughout the game.
Awards: Eliza Bradford, Sarah Hanmer and Gabby Clark.
C grade: It was a similar result in C grade, Blighty 12 defeated by Waaia on 51.
Coach Meg Erikson said ‘‘the girls played very hard against some experienced players’’.
Awards: Jess Hanmer, Dakota McKenzie and Jasmyn McKenzie.
C reserve: C reserve also struggled against a stronger Waaia side, which managed 35 goals to Blighty’s 11.
Coach Jess Jackson said it was a great first game for the season, in which some of the under 15s and 17s stepped up.
‘‘Emma and Linda were strong in defence,’’ Jackson said.
‘‘In midcourt, Shelby, Renee and Erica created turnovers and Tiah, Stevie and Melina were on point with goals.’’
Under 17: Blighty’s under 17s showed considerable strength on Saturday and held on for a tightly contested win — Blighty 46 to Waaia 41.
Coach Margaret Blake described the game as a ‘‘very pleasing win against a quality opponent’’.
Awards: Harmonie Tidcombe, Beth Laverly, Holly Amor and Shelby-Lea Hislop.
Under 15s: The under 15s had a more convincing win against Waaia, with a whopping 34 goal margin — Blighty 44 to Waaia 10.
Coach Kristeen Culton gave awards to Stevie Bateman, Melina Tidcombe, Jasmyn McKenzie and Ruby Caruso for their efforts on the court.
Under 13s: A combination of new and old blood in Blighty’s under 13s was no match for Waaia.
Blighty managed two goals during the four quarters, while Waaia steamed ahead with 38.
‘‘It was a good game for the girls, some who were first timers,’’ coach Lou Hanmer said.
Awards: Holly Allitt, Ruby Pisasale and Lucy Dudley.
Minis: In the Minis, which is not scored, the Blighty girls showed great team effort, and enthusiasm for the season ahead.
Awards: Savannah Bain, Inga Steenholdt, Chelsea Hehir and Bella Knox.
