The Rovers’ senior footballers are coming off another last-quarter comeback to win by 14 points to win against Katunga.
The side will be looking for less of a heartstopping showdown tomorrow but based on previous results anything is possible.
Rovers senior football coach Alex Hay said his team’s win last Saturday was important to get back to a winning performance which was led by some of their developing group of younger players.
“The win against Katunga was obviously really important after being in a bit of a slump for the month prior, and while we had played some good football, we just hadn’t been able to put it together.”
“What I was really pleased with was that it was our younger guys who have been really consistent all year that stood up in big moments with some authority to get us over the line.”
“Jackson Muldoon-Leetham has been excellent all year but really turned the game at one point with his work rate.
“Harry McIlwain had some contests late which, without him, things could have been very different.”
“Logan Leiper was excellent in the middle of the ground, Liam East who has become a general down back was just exceptional again and Cam Wills was just doing Cam Wills things so what that does is build some momentum to the back half of the year which is really important.”
Getting two wins in row for the Rovers’ senior side will be no guarantee, facing a spirited Rennie tomorrow.
Rennie are in thirteenth on the ladder but in round 11 had an eight point win against the Rovers’ last opponents Katunga.
Hay said Rennie are going to be another challenge for his side as well as potential wet-weather that is forecasted for the weekend.
“It looks like soggy conditions incoming for the game on Saturday and what we’ve always known of Rennie is the dower, physical brand that they play so the message will certainly be to come ready mentally for that challenge and try to match them in that area.”
“For us on the weekend we’ll look to take some control of the ball and increase the work rate to maintain possession.”
“One thing that we’ve learnt this year is that there are no easy games this year which is good and we’ll need to play with some purpose to give ourself a chance.”
Regardless of where the two teams are on the ladder the Rovers are looking to put on a good performance at Memorial Park tomorrow.
“Ladder position isn’t something that we’ve really focused on.”
“I think when it comes to this time of year, you probably get what you deserve, good or bad, in terms of where you’re sitting from your ability to play consistent footy.”
“Thankfully, our start to the year was quite strong which has put us in a strong position but the focus now is all about getting some consistency in the line up and with implementing our game style week to week.”
