A great crew of players descended on the Deniliquin Bowling Club from far and wide on the weekend for the Knockout Singles on Friday and the Classic Pairs tournament over Saturday and Sunday.

While the weather gradually deteriorated throughout Friday, the standard of bowls during the competition remained at top quality until the very end.

The two semi-finals saw George Lambos from Gippsland pitted against Zac Woning from the Mitcham Club in Melbourne, while Peter Nesbitt from Rich River took on Matt O'Brien from Lilydale.

Both matches promised to be top class encounters, and the large contingent of willing spectators were treated to just that.

Woning just did enough to get the better of Lambos, while Nesbitt prevailed by the barest of margins in a thriller against O'Brien.

At one stage in this match, O'Brien found himself eight shots in arrears.

He rallied magnificently to draw level at 10-all coming to the final end.

He again played beautifully to be seemingly in control, with Nesbitt needing to produce something special with the final bowl of the contest.

The wily veteran was up for the challenge however, and delivered the near perfect bowl to trail the jack through and snatch back the victory.

The scene was then set for an epic struggle in the final, and the two combatants didn't disappoint.

Nesbitt again bowled very well, but Woning appeared to have all the answers.

He managed to produce the big shots on most occasions when required, eventually claiming the victory and the $500 first prize.

Details and results from the Classic Pairs will appear in Friday's edition.
