Community to gather for annual Sorry Day event

Greater Shepparton residents will come together at Monash Park on Monday, May 26, to mark National Sorry Day and reflect on the ongoing impact of past government policies on First Nations families.

Held annually on May 26, Sorry Day acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, particularly the children of the Stolen Generations who were forcibly removed from their families.

The day was first observed in 1998, following the release of the Bringing Them Home report, which documented the experiences of survivors and outlined key recommendations for healing and justice.

While some of those recommendations have since been implemented, many remain unfulfilled, and Sorry Day continues to serve as an important collective moment of recognition and reflection.

The Shepparton ceremony will begin at 10.10am and include a Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony, readings from local secondary school students, a guest speaker, flag raising and the laying of wreaths.

The event is open to all community members.
