Deniliquin Athletics president Leanne Mulham said the event will be a chance for the club to showcase their great equipment and facilities at Hardinge St Oval.
‘‘We are expecting more than 180 athletes at our twilight carnival and we already have athletes travelling from Albury, Swan Hill, Wagga Wagga, Echuca, Kyabram and Nathalia,’’ she said.
‘‘The club invites members of the public to come and watch and support all the athletes’ efforts.
‘‘We are very fortunate to have many of our ex-Deni athletics club members helping out at our carnival and we would also welcome any extra assistance and if you are available to help.
‘‘The carnival will start at 1pm and is expected to be a great night of talent and sportsmanship.”
Deniliquin’s athletics season started six weeks ago, and athletes are creating new personal bests in a variety of events each week.
‘‘Our athletes come back every week, determined to improve their skills and enjoy competing with their friends,’’ Mulham said.
‘‘We have already have five new centre records achieved for the season just six weeks, which is an incredible effort.
‘‘Jemika Cooper now holds the Under 14 girls high jump record, clearing a height of 1.46cm, beating 1.45cm set by Melissa Cavanagh back in 1988.
‘‘Elena Mulham holds the Under 15 girls javelin record throwing 24.89m beating the previous record held by Nadia Pearn.
‘‘Alvin Cooper now shares the Under 15 boys high jump record with Terence Wade set at 1.61cm.
‘‘Connor Wilson holds the Under 11 boys javelin record throwing 22.70m and last week Matilda Eddy set a new Under 9 girls scissor kick record of 1m.’’
The club also hosted a ‘Show your stripes’ fun day, which is an annual fundraiser to support Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Held in the lead up to McHappy Day on November 16, it is in recognition of Little Athletic NSW being an official partner of the charity.
‘‘As a club we delighted to be able to donate $521 to this worthy cause to support families with sick kids.’’
