The debate topic was a highly contentious issue — ‘That the government is doing enough to help with drought relief’.
The students were arguing the affirmative, but could not quite convince adjudicator Brian McCleary the effort was enough.
‘‘The main points centred around the water issues facing farmers during the current drought,’’ Lions secretary Janet Mathewson said.
‘‘The high school held the affirmative position with insightful and relevant arguments, but the Lions Club won the night by a small margin.’’
Speakers for Deniliquin High School were Dottie Wilson, Shannon King, Roisin Schofield and Alex Poka. Kirn Kular was team chairman, and teacher Jacqui Johnson was the team’s coach.
The students came up against Carole Stevenson, Pat Fogarty and Norm Purtill in the debate.
This year’s win is the second in a row for Lions, and it closes the results gap between the two competitors.
The Deniliquin Lions Club has now won 13 debates, to Deniliquin High School’s 14.
