The man told police he made a purchase through a Facebook buy, swap and sell page dedicated to fishing gear on January 1.
Immediately after transferring the money to the seller’s bank account, his contact with the seller was blocked.
The items he intended to purchase have not been delivered.
Police said it’s an important reminder to be wary of transferring money to anyone you do not know.

Cemetery damaged
Police are investigating two reports of damage at the Deniliquin Cemetery.
Tyre marks in the lawn cemetery were reported about 1.30pm Friday.
Police said it appears a car’s tyres were purposely spun on the grass.
About the same time, non-offensive graffiti was spotted on the nearby memorial wall.
Police said CCTV footage shows a person in the cemetery, and at the memorial wall, between 12.15am and 1.20am on Friday.
Investigations are continuing, and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 5881 9299.
Scooters missing
Scooters have been reported missing from a Deniliquin home.
The scooters were reportedly left in the front yard of the Edwardes St home about 6pm Friday, and reported missing about 4.30pm Sunday.
Attempted theft on camera
Police are investigating an attempted theft, after security cameras showed someone entering a car at a Victoria St home in Deniliquin.
The owners contacted police after the security camera was activated about 3.20am Saturday, which showed someone opening an unlocked passenger side car door.
Police said the person had left by the time they arrived, and nothing has been reported missing from the car.
