Quick response prevents damage

Capt Smith said firefighters were called to the Deniliquin Island Sanctuary about 7.18pm, at the height of the storm, due to reports of a campfire.

They extinguished the campfire before it could spread and cause a bushfire in the sanctuary.

At 8.24pm that night, firefighters were called to a north Deniliquin home where the occupant was burning leaves in the back yard.

The quick response from firefighters resulted in no damage from either fire, but Capt Smith said ‘‘extreme wind meant each of the fires could have gotten out of control easily and quickly, becoming a danger to lives and property’’.
