‘Let’s Colour Deni Blue’ was launched by the the Deni Mental Health Awareness Group, Deniliquin Local Health Advisory Committee and Deniliquin Health Action Group last week, and has taken off.
‘‘The essential workers are in our thoughts as we all work together to slow the spread of COVID-19,’’ Deni LHAC chair Lourene Liebenberg said.
‘‘While we stay home, wash our hands and avoid gatherings, our essential workers are going to work to ensure we are cared for.
‘‘So we are asking you to please tie a blue ribbon to your front fence, your post box, your place of business or anywhere else you can think of to let these essential workers know we support them, we value them and we are grateful for the work they are doing.
‘‘Alternatively colour your social media pages blue by using our profile picture or profile picture frame to show your support.
‘‘Thank you to all our essential workers.’’
Mrs Liebenberg said ribbons will be available at Deniliquin Florist and other locations, and that extra blue ribbon has been ordered to meet demand.
If you can’t get a ribbon, she said ‘‘anything blue will do’’.
Thank you health workers
People across Australia and internationally are recording themselves applauding and posting it to social media as a beautiful message of thanks to all health workers amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
The movement went viral last week when celebrities started to post the videos, and now members of our community are joining in.
There have also been photos of Mathoura families at the front of their homes posted on Facebook, which has been well received and described as a ‘‘beautiful display of support’’.
The Pastoral Times would like to say thank you to all essential and heath workers who continue to serve their community during these trying times.
Brenda’s local challenge
Local marathon swimmer Brenda Norman has made the most of a difficult situation by swimming a section of the Edward River on the weekend.
The Channel 4 Change founder’s opportunity to complete the World Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming later this year has unfortunately been put on hold with the Manhattan 20 Bridges Swim called off due to the Coronavirus.
Miss Norman, who will also miss out on the Mentone Marathon, New Zealand Chopper Challenge and Sydney Palm2Shelly swims this year, decided to set herself a local challenge in light of the situation.
She swam about 41km from Four Post to Stevens Weir on Saturday in an outstanding time of 10 hours and 32 minutes.
More details on her swim and cancellation of upcoming swims will be in Friday’s edition.
Supportive messages
Teachers at St Michael’s Primary School were greeted with a kind message of support yesterday morning when they arrived for work.
‘‘Thank you to my teachers and Mrs Marshall’’ was written with blue chalk on the pavement outside of the school gates, surrounded by pink hearts.
Many Australian families are starting to draw colourful pictures and words of encouragement on the pathway or driveway at the front of their houses to make people smile.
RSL’s voucher offer
Deniliquin RSL Club has said it will still honour club vouchers during restricted operations as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The club has said the vouchers can be used to purchase items in the club’s new Grocery Store, which makes surplus items from the club’s kitchen available to members of the public in smaller quantities.
Any voucher issued through bingo, raffles or Go Racing can be used to purchase these goods.
Bistro vouchers can also be redeemed when buying from the bistro takeaway menu, with members asked to alert the staff on order that you are paying with vouchers.
The Grocery Store is open from 8am to 8pm daily, and items include meat, vegetables, dry goods, canned goods, frozen items, cheese and eggs.
A delivery service for both grocery items and takeaway meals is available.
Community garden closed
The Deniliquin Community Garden last week made the decision to close to the public.
Members can still continue to tend their plots at the Macauley St facility, provided they follow strict social distancing and hygiene rules.
The community garden will let the public know of any changes.
