The history book telling the stories of these pioneers is the latest project of Deniliquin Genealogy Society.
One of the early Deniliquin leaders to be featured is Dr David Griffith Jones, the founder of the , who published the first edition in May 1859. The Pastoral TimesPastoral Times is Deniliquin’s oldest, continually operating business.
DG Jones was also involved in developing a vast range of community activities including education, health, law enforcement and vital infrastructure needs for an emerging town. When Dr Jones died on December 26, 1876 the newspaper he founded summed up the community’s loss at news of his passing:
''This sad intelligence will be learned with regret throughout the Riverina, where for so many years the deceased gentleman had actively identified himself with all matters affecting the public welfare.
‘‘In the year 1859 he established the Pastoral Times and was thus the pioneer of journalism in the Southern Riverina. During his long career here as a journalist he was unremitting in urging the claims of the district, and ably advocated the cause of the pastoral tenants.
‘‘He took a warm interest in all matters relating to the welfare of the town and district and was foremost in promoting all measures tending to their advancement.’’
The story of Dr DG Jones is just one of many to be featured in the book of district pioneers.
Contributions for the book are being accepted until Tuesday, June 30 and can be sent to Valerie Hardman at valhard@bigpond.com or phone 0402 443 393.
