A header fire ignited the blaze, about 10km south of Deniliquin, just before 10am.
Mid Murray Rural Fire Service operational officer Jodie Graham said authorities worked for about two hours to bring the fire under control and extinguish the flames.
It has ravaged about 49 hectares of grassland by 12.30pm, and trees in the area continued smoking and were being monitored.
“The Hill Plain and Deniliquin brigades were first on scene and responded swiftly, with support from Mathoura, Brassi, Wandook and Mid Murray Support Bulk Water arriving shortly after,’ Ms Graham said.
“Aircraft assistance also played a key role in bringing the fire under control.
“Traffic was blocked in both directions until the fire was under control.”

While the trees were expected to smoke for only a day or two, smouldering could continue for longer.
Day patrols of the area will continue until the RFS is satisfied there is no risk of a flare up.
Anyone who sees smoke or an unattended fire, in the Hill Plain area or anywhere else across the region, they should contact 000 immediately.
Residents are asked to check the fire danger daily, and the associated responsibilities, and landholders should keep an eye out for any harvest alerts or bans.
Fire authorities have also worked with local government on a statutory No Burn Period (read more below) for December and January.
The Bush Fire Danger period started in the Mid Murray RFS zone on October 1, and remains in place until early March 2026.
