Known nationally as Australia's official Beach Ambassador, Mr Farmer is also a member of the Australia Day Council’s ambassador program, and will be guest speaker at the Barham ceremony on Australia Day.
Mayor John Harvie said Mr Farmer has dedicated more than 40 years to protecting and promoting the environmental, cultural and social value of Australia's beaches and waterways.
''Brad Farmer AM embodies the spirit of Australia Day through his commitment to community, care for our natural environment and passion for bringing people together,'' Cr Harvie said.
''His message resonates strongly in our region, where our rivers and lakes play such an important role in community life, recreation and connection.''
Mr Farmer comes from a seventh-generation Australian family who carved out a living from sheep stations across outback Queensland and NSW, with his passion beginning at age 12 when he launched his first beach campaign on the Gold Coast.
This passion has since seen him found major not-for-profit initiatives including Coastcare, National and World Surfing Reserves, Surfrider Foundation Australia and Ocean Care Day.
Mr Farmer was awarded Member of the Order of Australia in 2019 for his distinguished service to conservation, community and the environment.
He is also a best-selling author and researcher who has studied Australian beaches for almost four decades and personally visited thousands of coastal and inland beach locations.
Now in his 14th consecutive year as an Australia Day Ambassador, Mr Farmer said Australia Day is his favourite day of the year.
“Raising the flags of our wonderful country always gives me goosebumps and fills me with pride,” he said.
“Days filled with community cricket or a cold one, laughter through hardships and joy through a sense of inclusivity, is what I seek and encourage on our special national day.”
The Barham Australia Day Breakfast will be held in Riverside Park on January 26 from 8am.
The Barham ceremony is one of six being held in the Murray River Council region this year.
