She becomes only the third president of the group in more than 25 years.
At the July AGM, Mrs Matthews was elected to replace Lindsay Renwick as president.
After 10 years in the position, he has taken a step back but remains actively involved with the group.
Before Mr Renwick’s tenure, the president’s role had been held by the late Bill Mulham for 15 years.
Other past presidents of the historical society, which was formed in 1958, include Clyde Whittakers, Jack Bushby, Ray Nankivell, Doris Mills and Pat Smith.
Other executive members of the Deniliquin & District Historical Society in 2025/2026 are vice president Learion White, secretary Meg Christian and treasurer Ian Lea.
In welcoming the new executive, the group also paid tribute to Mr Renwick for his dedication.
“No-one could be more passionate than Lindsay about this town and our history, and no doubt we will still rely on his knowledge and mentorship for guidance,” the group said.
“We wish him well in his anticipated travels and future endeavours.”
The executive committee and other volunteers oversee the running of the Deniliquin & District Historical Society Museum in Macauley St, Deniliquin.
They also work on projects to preserve Deniliquin and district’s history.
The museum displays some of the region’s oldest treasures, in the freshest ways.
With such a large amount of information on everything ‘Deni’, there is something for everybody — from history buffs to farming enthusiasts.
The building alone is something to behold, and was once the police inspector’s residence.
The open faced museum is tasteful and an insight into riverside elegance. With a rose studded garden crawling beside the footpath, the site is classically beautiful.
The Deniliquin & District Historical Society Museum is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 12 noon, although you’re likely to find members there most days of the week who can help.
Viewings outside normal hours can also be booked by calling 0428 359 297.
